Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 Details

The much anticipated Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 is now official. Samsung will offer the Galaxy Tab 2 in a 7.7 inch model and a 10.1 inch model. Both devices are significantly upgraded from the original Galaxy Tab and one of the best features for the 2nd gen is WiFi Direct. Samsung is incorporating this new technology into most of their portable devices like smartphones, tablets, and even camera. WiFi Direct allows users to share images, videos and apps onto a TV via WiFi. A very handy tool for business or entertainment. The internal specs have also been beefed up to accommodate users demand for performance. Let's take a closer look at the Galaxy Tab 2.

First, we will take a look at the big fella, the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1. It's kind of funny saying all those number behind the Galaxy Tab name but this tablet is no joke. The 10 inch Tab 2 is thin and light measuring 256.6 x 175.3 x 9.7 mm  and weighs 588g. It is powered by 1 GHz Dual-Core Processor with 16 and 32 GB of storage options (microSD is availiable for additional 32GB). A standard 1 GB of RAM will be plenty to multitask and stream internet data. The Tab 2 10.1 will host a rear-facing 3 megapixel camera and a front-facing VGA camera. This tablet will ship with Android 4.0 ICS so there will be no need to wait for updates.

 

Other notable features for the 10 inch Galaxy Tab 2 include: video playback in full HD @ 30fps, video record in HD @ 30fps, Music Player with SoundAlive, 3.5mm Ear Jack, Samsung TouchWiz / Samsung L!ve Panel, Samsung Hub, Samsung S Suggest, Samsung ChatON mobile communication service, Samsung AllShare Play, Samsung Kies / Samsung Kies air, GoogleTM Mobile Services, Polaris document editor, A-GPS, Glonass, Bluetooth technology v 3.0, USB 2.0 Host, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Wi-Fi Direct, Accelerometer, Digital compass, Light.

Overall, it's a pretty sound tablet. One disappointing feature is the camera. I think Samsung could done a better job with the camera in the Galaxy Tab 2 but many manufacturers opting to put premium cameras in smartphone rather than tablets. I guess we can cut Samsung some slack. 

 

The Galaxy Tab 2 7.7 is identical to the 10.1 inch model except for it's size. The 7 inch model measures 193.7 x 122.4 x 10.5 mm and weighs 345g. Everything else is identical to the bigger version. Consumers also have to option to buy a 8 GB version where the 10 inch only comes in 16 GB and 32 GB. Both models come in WiFi only and WiFi 3G. Aside for the WiFi Direct feature, the Galaxy Tab 2 is a pretty standard tablet. We all know that Samsung is putting WiFi in a lot of their appliances like washer, dryers, ovens, and refrigerators. I can't wait to see how they will take advantage of WiFi direct.
