If you can't be seen in public with a ho hum $500 smartphone, you're in luck. RIM has teamed up with Porsche to create a limited edition Blackberry. Priced at $2300, the Blackberry Porsche P9981 is one of the most expensive phones money can buy. This phone is currently only available in the UK and the Middle East but rumors are it will be released in the US by Spring 2012. What's so special about this phone you ask? Let's take a look at the specs.
There's nothing that really stands out as far as performance goes. The P9981 sports a 1.2 GHz processor with a 768MB RAM, a 2.8 inch VGA touchscreen with 640 by 480 resolution, 5MP camera that captures video at 720p HD, and runs Blackberry 7 OS. There are $200 smartphones that have similar if not better specs.
So what's the deal? Maybe it's made out of some precious metal like Platinum. Well aside from the plastic cover on the bottom for the antenna, most of the phone is composed of stainless steal. To avoid slippage, the back part of the phone is made of real leather. Also, the navigation button below the screen is are individual pieces of glass.
The Blackberry Porsche P9981 is definitely pleasing to the eye. It looks sleek, elegant, and high-end. Performance wise, it's pretty much the Blackberry Bold 9900. What you are paying for is the branding. RIM and Porsche have put in a lot of time and effort in designing and producing this high-end smartphone for enthusiasts. If you have the cash and love to collect limited edition items, why not?
